DESCRIPTION:Â Carpinus betulus is a shade-loving medium to tall deciduous tree, which prefers moderate soil fertility and moisture. It is smooth barked, with dense foliage of fine toothed green leaves, and resembles the beech tree in many ways. Leaves turn yellow in Autumn.
LANDSCAPE USES:Â Hornbeams are widely used in landscape gardening, mainly as tall hedges and for topiary.
TOLERANCES:Â Prefers moderate soil fertility and moisture.
TREE CARE:Â Plant in a well drained and well worked soil. Take care to plant the bud union above the soil level. Water in well and keep soil moist until tree is established. Fertilize when planting and again after new growth appears. Prune to shape if necessary.
