This Month's Feature Trees
Lush new growth and blossoms make these two trees stand out in the crowd in your spring garden
Ulmus parvifolia
Chinese Elm
This is a lovely shade and specimen tree with highly ornamental bark. Chinese Elms are suited to a wide range of conditions such as wet and dry areas, compaction, and air pollution. With a height of 10-15 metres and a width of 8 – 12 metres at a moderate growth rate, this tree makes an ideal medium sized shade tree.
The Chinese Elm Tree has a variable, wide spreading vase to broadly rounded habit. It has thick, glossy dark green leaves that are often yellow to yellowish-green in autumn. There is a tendency for it to be semi-evergreen, especially in warmer areas.
Prunus 'Snofozam'
White Snow Showers
Also available in a pink flowering form, this strongly weeping flowering cherry is now in bloom. Grafted at 1.8m, these hardy deciduous trees make an ideal centrepiece in open gardens and roundabouts.
Foliage is serrated with lanceolate leaves, dark green in summer turning to orange, gold and red in autumn. This variety has excellent disease resistance and grows to it's best potential in full sun.
Keep an eye out for Aphids
Aphids are tiny sap sucking insects that will start to appear with warmer weather. They are usually black or green and can be found on new growth and on the underside of leaves.
Aphids can be easily dealt with using any of the following methods:
Confidor
A systemic insecticide that will kill the aphids by poisoning the plant sap. A good longer term and preventative method. This will also kill off most other insects.
White Oil or Neem Oil
A contact treatment that works by coating the insects skin so that it cannot breath. All aphids must be sprayed for this method to work.
Pyrethrum
A plant extract with low toxicity that kills on contact.
What's Looking Great
Weeping Japanese Maples are covered in lush new growth and looking fantastic with their bright colours.
